AWARD PROJECT- 32 UNIVERSITY AVENUE (Waterloo)

The new 8-level, 27 unit student residence stands where previously 2 smaller private residences were used for student rentals. The location of the project created a challenge for Coreslab Structures (Ont) Inc. due to heavy traffic volume surrounding the site as well as the restricted access during the erection phase. In order for the project to move along smoothly a great deal of coordination was required for all trades involved. The project features 8 levels of 8" thick hollow core slabs as well as solid slabs for the large balconies, in total, over 48,000 SF. The use of hollow core slabs provided a thinner flooring section, resulting in a higher ceiling than a traditional joist system would allow.

Shipments of precast hollow core slabs were delivered to the site every six days; portions of the street had to be shut down in order to allow for placement of the flatbed trailers. The tight 32-week schedule was maintained with cooperation and coordination between all trades and the contractor. The building was less than 2 weeks old when the first students moved in; just in time for the first week of school.

This project was submitted to the Grand Valley Construction Association's Building Excellence Awards by the General Contractor, Protrend-Arrow Construction Inc., resulting in Coreslab's Award of Merit for our contribution to the project.
